Ticking Through Time: My Dream Journey as a Clock Specialist at Bonhams

In June, I began what I can only describe as my dream job—I became a clock specialist at Bonhams. For someone like me, who has always had a deep love for history, this job is nothing short of perfect.

For as long as I can remember clocks have always fascinated me. Those who know me are well aware—because I often mention it—that my first words were “tick tock.” However my professional journey into horology began when I left school at 17 to pursue a 3.5-year apprenticeship in clockmaking. During that time, I learned the intricate art of repairing and conserving clocks, a skill that I’ve come to love. There’s something incredibly satisfying about bringing these beautiful, intricate machines back to life. But if I’m being honest, it’s the history that captivates me the most.

Ever since I can remember, history has fascinated me. The idea of holding something from the past, something that witnessed events centuries ago, is thrilling. It’s like holding a piece of a story that’s waiting to be told. That’s what draws me to antiques, they are tangible links to moments long gone. Clocks, however, are even more special to me. They aren’t just objects; they’re living connections to the past. The steady tick of a clock is almost like a heartbeat, a rhythm that has been marking time for hundreds of years. And the sound of a clock’s bell today is the very same sound that someone might have heard 200 or 300 years ago. That continuity, that bridge between past and present, is something I find truly special.

One of the things I’ve come to love about my job at Bonhams is the people I’ve met. The world of clocks and antiques attracts some incredible individuals, each with their own passion and knowledge. Every new interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow, and I cherish that.

Under the mentorship of James Stratton, I’ve been able to learn so much. His guidance has been invaluable, and every day brings new lessons. Working at Bonhams has also given me the chance to handle and research clocks made by some of the greatest names in clockmaking history—Knibb, Tompion, and Breguet, just to name a few. It’s an honor to work with such horological masterpieces, and I find myself in awe of the craftsmanship and history of these incredible objects.

No two days are the same in this job, and that’s something I love. The variety keeps things exciting, and there’s always something new to discover. I often think to myself, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I wouldn’t change a thing—I’d still be here, doing exactly what I’m doing now. This is more than just a job to me; it’s a passion, a way of life. And I feel incredibly lucky to have found it so early on in my career.
