Part 2 Part 1 Many antique longcase clocks have undergone significant work over the centuries. In many cases, the movement is no longer original to the case; when this happens, it is known as a “marriage”. For that reason, it is always a pleasure to encounter a clock that has remained with its original movement throughout its life. I remember meeting Jeremy Evans for the first time and wondering what to expect. His name was one of those almost god-like names in the horological world: he was the world authority on Thomas Tompion, and when it came to the father of British clockmaking, Jeremy’s opinion was the one that mattered. He devoted his life to Tompion, and his research culminated in his books on the subject, which will remain definitive for generations. Recently I had the privilege of visiting Dr John C Taylor OBE on the Isle of Man to see the Daniels Roman Striking Knibb, now on show in the Clocktime Digital Museum. @clocktimesocial Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas, wherever you may be. To see this magnificent medieval building alive with worship, used for its original purpose, and accompanied by the mighty organ, one truly feels the grace of God. A most uplifting experience. Happy Christmas. Recently, I had the privilege of viewing the renowned Fish Scale Clock by Fromanteel. This extraordinary timepiece holds the distinction of being the oldest known clock with a full grande sonnerie, made in the golden age of clockmaking in the 1660s. The Fish Scale Clock is now available to explore online through the Clock Time Museum, an initiative by Dr. John C. Taylor OBE. An exceptional piece of horological history that truly showcases the innovation of British clockmaking. One question we are often asked is what all the various dials actually do on antique clocks. This particular table clock by Charles Gretton has more complications than most with a subsidiary dial in each corner. It sold for £15,360 including premium last week in our Fine Clock Sale at Bonhams.
